When folks tell me bag collection events are “fun” I have to laugh. Really?

But that’s exactly what Kim Branch, with Keep North Fulton Beautiful, told us about a recent collection they had at the Lowe’s Home Improvement store in Sandy Springs, Georgia, which is minutes from downtown Atlanta.

Oley, PA - Girl Scout Troop 1645 of Oley was recognized recently for collecting 61,852 plastic bags for recycling and reuse by Trex Co., headquartered in Winchester, Va. The company, one of the nation's leading manufacturers of wood alternative products for decking materials, puts forth an annual challenge to the entire country to see which participating organization can collect the most plastic bags.

Since launching A Bag’s Life earlier this year, Georgia recycling advocates have been busy getting the word out that there is more to me than a one-time tote.

From the southernmost boarder in historic Thomasville, northwest to Rome at the Alabama line and into the heart of metropolitan Atlanta, folks are embracing the notion that I’m not just a pretty face. :-)

Kroger Celebrates 'A Bag's Life' This Earth Day

Kroger, in partnership with several local organizations, is celebrating Earth Day by encouraging customers to value “A Bag’s Life” – a recycling movement that locates drop-off sites for plastic bags and wraps, including the 215 Kroger stores across its Atlanta Division that will accept customers’ plastic bags between April 16 – 22.

A recycling program that focuses on the plastic bags used by shoppers was kicked off at the state capitol Tuesday by DCA Commissioner Mike Beatty and the chairs of the two committees on natural resources, Sen. Ross Tolleson (R-Perry) and Rep. Lynn Smith (R-Newnan).

Called “A Bag’s Life,” the recycling program has identified nearly 750 locations at grocery and retail stores where consumers can dispose of their plastic shopping bags.

Plastic Bag Collection Events Tip the Scales on America Recycles Day

WASHINGTON, DC December 2, 2011 – Plastic bag recycling took on an educational and festive flair in schools, village squares, college campuses and retail store parking lots during America Recycles Day 2011, as community groups in 35 states embraced the message that plastic bags should not be treated like trash. In all, more than 130 plastic bag collection activities were held to celebrate the annual event sponsored by Keep America Beautiful and aimed at raising public awareness to reduce, reuse and recycle throughout the year.
