When folks tell me bag collection events are “fun” I have to laugh. Really?

But that’s exactly what Kim Branch, with Keep North Fulton Beautiful, told us about a recent collection they had at the Lowe’s Home Improvement store in Sandy Springs, Georgia, which is minutes from downtown Atlanta.

Georgia has joined six other states in a nationwide initiative to educate people about what they can and cannot recycle. You may be surprised by how much trash is really a recycling treasure.

A few weeks ago, I was walking into the Weis in West Manchester Township, behind an older gentleman. He was carrying a bag full of plastic bags, and I thought “How nice that he’s recycling those.” Weis has a white, cardboard box outside — next to the trash can — that’s clearly marked “Recycle plastic bags.”

Recycling has become a major priority in Philadelphia, for groups as diverse as the Phillies to SEPTA to the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability to individuals opting to separate their plastics and paper and discard accordingly.

Now a group called Keep Philadelphia Beautiful, a non-profit focused on litter prevention and upkeep of neighborhoods, is launching “A Bag’s Life,” on America Recycles Day, Tuesday, November 15.

The N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources and N.C. Maritime Museum in Beaufort will host the second annual Crystal Coast Earth Day Festival April 23 at Fort Macon State Park in Carteret County.

The event will be from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the new Coastal Education and Visitor Center, 2300 East Fort Macon Road, Atlantic Beach. Admission and activities are free.

A superhero out to combat waste, an animated talking grocery sac and a fashion report featuring haute couture are among three of the top vote-getters so far in a statewide Virginia high school video contest promoting recycling and reuse of plastic bags. Online voting ends April 3 at 5 p.m. in the A Bag’s Life Video Contest, which will award two top prizes of $1,000 each.

(Bonnie Gonzalez) YNN Austin -- Next time you come across a plastic bag, remember the three R’s -- Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

"A Bag's Life" is the slogan for a cooperative effort between private and public organizations to keep plastic bags out of landfills.

Tuesday, the campaign launched a website along with an app to help people find one of nearly 1,800 drop-off locations for recycling the bags in Texas.
